To ensure our residents are provided a quality outpatient education and continuity of care, we have incorporated an X+Y+Z schedule system for our program. Our academic year is broken into 26 two-week blocks. X rotations are two blocks long, and residents rotate on an inpatient admitting service; there is no continuity clinic during this time. Y rotations are one block long, and consist largely of inpatient consult rotations with one continuity clinic half day per week. During their two weeks on a Z rotation, residents are eligible for vacation, have four continuity clinic half days per week and rotate through UMMC’s numerous subspecialty clinics. The holiday schedule is 10 days in length; residents cover an inpatient service or clinic for five days and receive an additional five days off for vacation.
